Photography at the laboratory complex on bituminous materials of LUKOIL

LLK-International LLC is a 100% subsidiary of LUKOIL PJSC, which specializes in the production and sale of lubricants and bituminous materials.

ООО "ЛЛК-Лукойл"

The company is also engaged in the development and sales of oil and bitumen products and in research. LLK-International makes bituminous materials at its factories in Nizhny Novgorod and Volgograd. On May 24, 2019, a new complex of laboratories of the LUKOIL Research Center (R&D Center) for bituminous materials was launched in the Nizhny Novgorod region. As to the equipment, the R&D center is not inferior to the best specialized European R&D centers. The equipment at the R&D center allows using more than 70 methods for testing bitumen and asphalt concrete. The specialists of the center develop modern bituminous materials, simulate technological processes, test the quality of plant products, and, along with asphalt concrete manufacturing companies, check the results of using road construction materials.

In January 2020, the Studio was invited for industrial photography of the laboratories of the Scientific Research Center for bituminous materials. Within two days, we took photographs of the complex of research and testing laboratories located right on the territory of the Nizhny Novgorod Oil Refinery. To give an idea of the scientific work of the center, we started with the photography of laboratory equipment.

We managed to make many good photographs. For example, measuring the maximum density of an asphalt concrete mix in a laboratory vacuum pycnometer looks fascinating.

At the laboratories, one can find many interesting things that are not entirely clear to an outside observer at first glance. Our attention was drawn to the multicolored bitumen additives that give modern road materials various additional properties. The quality and durability of asphalt concrete depends on the proper combination of bitumen and modifiers.

One of the methods for studying bitumen is tensile strength test. Bitumen is poured into brass molds so that when it hardens, the product can be hooked on both sides and one can try to break it into two parts. We also took photographs of the equipment and materials for testing bitumen softening point, flash point, tensile strength, and other characteristics that are important for ensuring road surface quality.

In addition to organizing research work, the R&D Center acts as an educational center. The research activities of LLK-International are performed in close cooperation with scientific institutes and road construction organizations. This allows training industry professionals at the most advanced specialized laboratory complex in Russia.
